Why do we accept “it’s always been done like that” as a valid reason to do something? It’s not and new thinking should always be considered.”

Paul Macro

Paul joined Bacon & Woodrow in 1990 and worked on DB schemes until qualifying as an Actuary in 1994. Following his work designing and implementing a number of new DC schemes, he foresaw that DC was the future and spent the following years playing a key role in developing and delivering the bulk of the firm’s DC consulting services .

Following a move to Yorkshire, Paul was recruited by Aon Consulting as Head of DC Propositions in 2004, where he introduced an innovative approach to the bundling of DC services and gained considerable experience as a conference speaker and press contact .

In 2007, Paul joined the UK DC management team as a Partner of Watson Wyatt (later Towers Watson / Willis Towers Watson). During this time, he authored four editions of their FTSE100 DC Survey and led their team and client activity on the 2012 Auto-Enrolment reforms.

In 2012, Paul moved to Mercer as a Partner to lead their UK DC team taking responsibility for (amongst many other things!) the firm’s auto-enrolment proposition and reaction to the 2014 Budget Pension Freedom changes. In addition, Paul was also instrumental in bringing Mercer’s Master Trust to market.

Paul joined Isinglass in 2015 and since then has been involved in numerous and varied projects including:

  • Feasibility study, provider selection and implementation of numerous trust based schemes to master trusts.
  • Design and implementation of master trusts for two large employee benefit consultants.
  • Full assistance and project management work for Authorisation of several major Master Trusts.
  • Liaison with the Pensions Regulator following queries relating to Master Trust Authorisations applications for several (different) Master Trusts.
  • Advice, provider selection and project management of the winding-up up of two master trusts under Continuity Option 1.
  • Feasibility work on a new DC proposition for an investment manager.
  • Consideration of how to provide post-retirement flexibility options both within schemes and using a ‘preferred provider’.
  • Acted as deputy pensions manager for a major organisation during a period of significant change and sale activity.
  • Independent Trustee role for two master trusts (now wound up).
  • DC investment default fund reviews.
  • Review of compliance with all of The Pensions Regulator’s Codes of Practice for a large DB/DC hybrid scheme.
  • Member communication program for senior executives around changes to the Lifetime and Annual Allowances.
  • Full research into the master trust and auto-enrolment provider markets.

Outside of work, Paul is endeavouring to stop his 18th Century farmhouse from falling down, whilst being a husband to Jan, and father to two adult children and numerous pets.
